Pakho Chau

Pakho Chau is a Hong Kong Cantopop singer and songwriter. He was a newcomer to the music industry in 2007, signed to Warner Music Group, Hong Kong.

Discovery

Chau once represented Hong Kong in basketball, and has also worked as a lifeguard, swimming teacher, piano teacher, and as a result of his height of 182 cm, a part-time model, under Hong Kong modelling agency Starz People, becoming a model and spokesperson for many companies and brands in Hong Kong.

After a while, Chau decided to pursue his long-time passion for music, and saved up money to go abroad and learn music production techniques, but was deterred by his superiors who introduced him to a record producer in Hong Kong, Chan Kwong-wing . This led to Chau working in Chan's recording studio as an unpaid engineer for almost two years, learning all that he could, recording commercial jingles and demos for other singers.

Eventually noticed by Chan and many others for his hard work, Chau was given the chance to become a singer himself, and signed to Warner Music Group to become their newcomer in the music industry for 2007.

Career

Having learned the piano since the age of 5 and being able to play the guitar, Chau is also a songwriter in addition to being a singer. Of the 5 songs in his debut EP, '''', one is composed by Chau while the lyrics of four songs are also by Chau himself. As a result of his experience from working in a recording studio as an engineer, Chau also produces many of his own songs, along with his mentor Chan Kwong-wing.

His debut single, "Same Sky" , rapidly shot to the top slots of radio song charts in Hong Kong, and became a hit song. His second single, "Six Days" also became extremely popular.

Within three days of the release of his debut EP '''' more than 5000 copies were sold, resulting in a rapid reprinting process.

In 2008, Chau wrote the theme song for his upcoming film Love Is Elsewhere. This song, "Foolish Boy" , achieved great popularity in Hong Kong.

In May 2008, a new duet song recorded with Stephanie Cheng was released, called "Nothing Done" , becoming immensely popular and reaching the top of many music charts.

In July 2008, in time for the Hong Kong Book Fair, Chau released a photo album, containing a collection of his own black and white photos. Chau also wrote words to accompany these photos. This photo album was called "Here's Where It All Began" , and sold extremely well.

His second album, entitled '''', was released on August 21, 2008.

Joey Yung

Joey Yung Cho-Yee ( 容祖兒; 容祖儿; Cantonese: Yung Cho-Yee; Mandarin pinyin: Róng Zǔ'ér is a popular singer and actress from Hong Kong. She is an artist of the Emperor Entertainment Group. She won the "Most Popular Female Singer Award" at the year end Jade Solid Gold Awards in 2003 with the help of her hit, "" and won the same prize in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 thus emerging as one of the premier Cantonese singers in the world.

Biography

Early career

At age 15, Joey participated in many singing contests, including the Big Echo Karaoke Singing Contest, in which she was given the opportunity to be an artist of Go East Entertainment Co. Ltd.. However, her talent did not win recognition of the company. Go East ended the contract with Joey soon after the song "The First Time I Want to be Drunk," which is the theme song of a movie, was recorded. The song is Joey's only song produced by Go East.

Afterwards, she continued with school while working as a clerk and helped her mother in managing the business of a fashion boutique. She was later introduced to Golden Pony Records Co. Ltd. by an ex-colleague of Go East. Not long after she joined the company, it withdrew its business in Hong Kong. Joey's singing career was once again terminated. A couple of years after, she followed Roman Tam, the godfather of Canto-pop, to learn singing.

Joey as a Newcomer

In 1998/1999, Joey joined Emperor Entertainment Group. Her talent was appreciated and she was sent abroad for training to enhance her singing skills in 1999.

As this was also the same company her mentor Roman was in, she also toured with Roman which helped her gain experience as a performer.

On 30 September 1999, her debut album was released. It charted on the IFPI Album Charts for 23 weeks, breaking the record for the most consecutive weeks on the IFPI album chart in Hong Kong, and sold 130,000 copies in Hong Kong alone. In later prize-giving ceremonies held by different media organizations, she won many awards together with Cecilia Cheung, who was regarded as a formidable adversary of Joey.

In January 2000, Joey's apartment was set ablaze. In the same year, she made an appearance in her first movie 'Winner Takes All' and her first TV drama series 'The Green Hope'. That year, she released two CDs, including her second EP, "Don't Miss," and her first studio album, "Who Will Love Me." At the same time, she became the spokesperson of many brands, like Four Seas, the Red Cross, and Netvigator. Her career flourished with her increasing exposure. She held her first concert at the prestigious Hong Kong Coliseum, titled 'Joey Yung's See You Everywhere Live Concert.'

Ups and Downs of a Rising Pop Princess

In 2001, she released her first compilation album 'Love Joey', which later on became the Best Selling Album of the Year. This is considered very impressive for a singer that has been around for less than 2 years. She then released two Cantonese albums, All New Summer Holiday and Solemn on Stage. In November, she held her second live concert and first concert series, 'H20+ Solemn on Stage Joey Yung Live in Concert 2001' at the Hong Kong Coliseum and began her singing career in Taiwan after she released her first album 'Honestly'. By the end of the year though, her career reached a crisis as a result of strained vocal cords and criticism of being plump.

In 2002, she was approved by her company to take a rest while learning dancing and make-up abroad. After two months of rest, she came back to Hong Kong and released her Canto-pop album ''. She then became the spokesperson of Nissin and Nikon. At the end of the year, she released her second collection album 'Love Joey II'.

Breakthrough as the newest Pop Queen

In 2003, her song 'My Pride', also the theme song of the TV commercial of Banyan Garden developed by Cheung Kong Limited, became well-known among the public. This song was awarded 'The Most Popular Song in the Nation' by RTHK. She became the spokesperson of a slimming parlor. In the fad of slimming in Hong Kong, Joey also had her body slimmed and presented herself as a sexy image. She held her third concert 'Joey Yung Live Show Up!' in Hong Kong Coliseum, which pushed her career to even higher heights, and she was soon named as 'Canto-pop Queen of Hong Kong'. At the end of the year, she was awarded the 'Most Popular Female Singer' in all prize-giving ceremonies held by the media. She was the second youngest singer in history to have won this prize . She also won another female singer award, the "Best Female Singer Gold" award at the CRHK Music Awards, and was the youngest singer to ever win this award. Following this, she began her world-wide tour including Canada, Australia, , Mainland China, Macau, Malaysia with her "Show Up concert" throughout 2004 to 2005.

Hong Kong's Reigning Pop Queen

In 2004, Joey continued her sexy image in her CD album 'Nin9 2 5ive' and her first photo album 'The Real Joey, Glamour in London'. Her photo album was greatly accepted by the public and ran out of stock shortly after its release. Her second album in 2004, 'Give Love A Break', was greatly appreciated by the public. She won the 'Most Popular Female Singer' prize of TVB and "My Favorite Female Singer" presented by the Commercial Radio, and many other honorable awards. Around Christmas, a Cantonese remake of 'Chihuahua' was sung by Joey as part of a Coca-Cola advertising campaign which included a portrayal of her buying a can of Coca-Cola. She won more than 20 awards and received the highest honor award again, The Media Award, which is given to the singer who accumulated the most awards from the 4 music award ceremonies in Hong Kong.

In 2005, Joey released her compilation album, Love Joey 3, and a Canto-pop album, Bi-Heart. Advertising her concert, Reflection of Joey's Live, which spanned eight days in October and November, Joey exhibited a very sexy image in the promotion poster. The theme song of the concert, 好事多為, was arranged and keyboarded by a Korean composer, which is a rare practice in Hong Kong. Funded by Sony Ericsson, found the top production crew to produce the MTV of the theme song. Unlike the concerts she held before, she had invited many guests and added more dancing elements, which were greatly appreciated. After the concert, Joey suffered from sore throat owing to the strain in her vocal cord. Several days after, she worked without chatting with other people with a view to let her vocal cord relax. Under the heavy workload, she hardly managed to spend several days receiving acupuncture treatment in Nanjing to have her voice restored. Recommended by a producer Joey then started to take singing lessons with popular entertainment voice coach Christine Samson. On Christmas Day, in the prize giving ceremony held by the Metro Radio Hong Kong, she won eight awards, being the artist to have gained the most prizes.

Sales of all her CDs reached over 5 million copies in 2004, which is impressive, as Canto-pop CD sales are usually about 100,000 copies. She has also won IFPI Best Selling Singer Awards since she started her career. It is also estimated that the total income from field of advertisements in 2004 was about $10 million. In 2005, she has purchased two connecting flats named The Legend at Jardine's Lookout, Hong Kong for HKD $40 million. It is not surprising that she has invested since she has earned more than HKD $60 million last year.

In January 2006, she received many awards such as the most popular female singer award for the consecutive third time. She has also won other awards such as Golden song etc. During the Hong Kong IFPI record sales awards 2005, for the 2nd year in a row, Joey was the best selling female artist. Two of her albums were of the top 10 selling albums. Following the success of the 8-night "Reflection's of Joey's Live Concert," her concert CD/VCD/DVD combined to have a sales of triple platinum , quite a rare accomplishment in today's Cantopop Industry.

On February 27, 2006, Joey released the album "Ten Most Wanted". More time was put in the production of this CD than any of Joey's previous CDs. Joey said she wanted to experiment with new musical styles and work with different musicians. One of the musicians behind this CD is well praised by Joey, Mavis Fan, who wrote the music of two of the ten songs, ''Get Fit with Jane Fonda'' and ''Torn Tongue'' . Both songs are fast songs that are completely different from the previous Joey songs.

Close Up

At the end of December, Joey released her Cantonese album Close Up. Songs include "Joyful Release" , her biggest hit last year "Unexpected Splendid Meeting", and her third and latest plug, "One Love One Lesson". The album received good response from the general public, and the first version is out of stock at online CD stores like Yesasia. Many people reported that it was sold out in stores all over Hong Kong. She released the second version on January 26, which included a bonus DVD with the music videos for "Unexpected Splendid Meeting" and "Joyful Release".

She was the biggest winner of the female singers at the four 2006 year end music awards , won the best CD seller among all the female singers, and was the most popular female singer in Asia. At the end of January, Neway helped organize a musical for Joey, entitled, "Safari". Joey was touched by the performers -- which included Anthony Wong, at17, Hins Cheung, Yumiko Cheng, Vincent Wong, and Sun Boy'z -- and fans that came out to help make the musical possible. She hopes to perform "Safari" again very soon. She held a concert in Malaysia in April.

On 7 July, she performed at the of Live Earth in Shanghai.

The Power Medley, which was a 20-minute intense dance medley of her fast songs, was widely complimented. The concert was highly praised, and thus led to a Part II of her Starlight Concert, which spanned over 4 nights, making Starlight 2008 a 14-day concert. In mid Feb, Joey travelled to New York to attend dance lessons, in hope to further improve her dancing skills, and strengthen her reputation as the new dance queen, as well as the most popular female singer, in Hong Kong. Jade Kwan

Jade Kwan is a Cantopop singer in Hong Kong.

About Jade

Kwan entered the New Talent Singing Awards Vancouver Audition 1999 with the song "Face" originally sung by singer Faye Wong and was awarded first runner-up. As such, she represented Vancouver in the New Talent Singing Awards Canada Finals 1999 and won. She then competed in the New Talent Singing Awards International Finals 1999 and won the "Best Potential Newcomer Award" The International Finals was held in Shanghai, China.

She was first known to the public as "Kwan Sum-yin" in 2002. Unlike many 'singers' in Hong Kong in the past few years who started out in a modelling company, Kwan emerged as a new-age genius with a sure-to-impress voice. Her singing talents were greatly admired and her albums promisingly received. Her first two albums, "Jade-1" and "Jade-2", won her reassuring gold records. Over the years, she has won many music industry awards in Hong Kong and China.

Kwan is blessed with musical talents. Not only is she talented in singing, she also plays a few musical instruments including piano, guitar and saxophone. Jade minored in Music Composition while attending University of British Columbia in Canada.

Her latest album, 'Jade.i', was released in May 2008.

Moreover, she is a devoted Christian, and has been quite active recently in the Christian community in Hong Kong. She sang a few Christian songs earlier this year and some of them eventually became popular even in the mainstream music market despite the religious connotations of the songs. She has chosen to sing not only for her fans, but also for God.

Fiona Sit

Fiona Sit Hoi-Kei is a female Cantopop singer and actress from Hong Kong. She entered the music industry through her uncle's connections with Warner Music Group, Hong Kong. She was signed by Warner Music in 2004.

Biography

Fiona Sit attended Island School and continued her higher education at the City University of Hong Kong until 2004.

Her first language is and she can speak fluent and . The album contained the hit ballad "XBF" and another hit "Keanu Reeves Reply."

On 7 January 2005, Warner Music released a single named ''886''. It included songs such as "Pumpkin Wagon" and "886", which is a short term of ''Byebye'' in Cantonese ICQ language. The single was a huge success and it was sold out within 3 weeks.

Warner Music released her second album, ''Funnygirl'', in April 2005. Its success resulted in the release of ''Funnygirl '', which included a DVD with her music videos, including the #1 single "A Boy Like You".

Her third album, ''Me'', was another CD+DVD combination released on 23 December 2005. It included the song "Love", which was featured in the film ''Embrace Your Shadow'', which Sit starred in. The DVD was a live concert footage of her "903 Fiona 0811" performance.

She has won a number of awards, including a gold award for best female newcomer at the Hong Kong Music Awards, as well as a gold award for the song "Keanu Reeves' Reply."

In 2006, Sit raised some controversy with her video clip for "Tong But Lut" as it hold great resemblance to the video clip of "ourselves" by Japanese superstar Ayumi Hamasaki. Her song "Dear Fiona" is a Cantonese version of the song ''Tomorrow's Way'' by .

Sit's official fan club, Club F was established on August 11 2006 in conjunction with her 25th birthday. Her 4th album "Electric Angel" was released on the same day as well. 200 fans attended the first gathering, which was held in a Chinese restaurant in Wan Chai.

After Electric Angel, Sit went over to Taiwan in order to improve her Mandarin skills. In order to keep her fanbase , Warner released her first compilation, ''"F" Best'', on 12th June 2007. This album includes 3 new songs with 15 selected songs from her previous albums. The album also includes a DVD containing a short film and some MVs of her songs.

After training in Taiwan in one year, Sit mastered the Mandarin dialect, and made her debut Mandarin album ''It's My Day'' which was released on 18th April 2008. The album is recorded in Taiwan and also in Singapore. It features songs such as ''I don't need Tiffany'', which refers to the jewelry and a duet with Khalil Fong, ''Overcoming Memories''.

TV series

In 2005 Sit went on to film her first Hong Kong TVB series as a female police trainee. To match the character's circumstances, Fiona cut her hair short. In contrast to her past success, fans responded atrociously towards this change in her image, and were wary of her future career decisions. She followed with a cameo performance on On The First Beat. In addition to this, Fiona was also featured in a weight loss product TV commercial, where she was required to do a dance routine. These two events led to numerous mockeries by the Hong Kong media, and dramatically decreased her fanbase.

2008 bottle attack incident

On February 23 2008, Sit was attacked by a 27 year-old man named Lin during a charity event at Mong Kok. During the incident a bottle of herbal tea was thrown at her which resulted in an injury to Sit's forehead. The attacker, Lin, was detained by security guards and later arrested. The bottle also caused minor injury to a staff member of the event. Sit, who reportedly broke into tears, was taken to Kwong Wah Hospital.

Emme Wong

Emme Wong Yee-Man is a Cantopop singer based in Hong Kong. She made her singing debut as ''"Dior Wong"'' with the EP ''Pure Impression'' in November 2001, followed by her first full-length studio album ''Scents'' in July 2002. After a year's hiatus, she changed her name to Emme and returned with her second album with a new, provocative playgirl image that she has been noted for ever since. The subsequent EP ''Good Show'' released in 2004 continues in the same vein. She returned in May 2008 with the new dance single ''Aspire'' .

Wong has, over the years, recorded many Cantonese covers of songs originally sung in English, including "What Took You So Long" by Emma Bunton , "Round Round" by The Sugababes , "" by t.A.T.u., and more recently a remixed version of "He Doesn't Love You" by Sarah Mcleod .

Eman Lam

Eman Lam is a Hong Kong cantopop singer and musician. Lam and Ellen Joyce Loo form the group at17.

Background

Eman Lam is the sister of Hong Kong based singer-songwriter and musician Chet Lam. Probably influenced by her brother, she began performing music early in life. She sang in some of the song demos composed by Chet Lam, which gained her initial attention from music production company People Mountain People Sea's director Anthony Wong Yiu Ming.

In 2000, Lam met Ellen Joyce Loo at "Original Music 2000" , a singing competition in Hong Kong. After the competition, she started performing with Loo at university campuses and tertiary institutions. The team again drew attention from Ming, who decided to sign them under his music production company and later became at17.

In contrast with Ellen Joyce Loo , Eman Lam’s songs seems show inclination toward more varieties of styles including folk, jazz and blues.

Loo was later signed by the music production company People Mountain People Sea and formed the group at17 with Eman Lam .

Apart from writing songs for her own group, she is also involved in the production and song writing of other singers' albums such as Miriam Yeung, Sally Yeh and Ken Chu.
